draft-ietf-grow-yang-bgp-communities support in the NLNOG Looking Glass
by Teun Vink 18 Jul '24

18 Jul '24

Hi all, Some time ago Martin Pels proposed a standard for describing BGP communities in a standardised format. The draft can be found here: https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-grow-yang-bgp-communities/. This standard provides a formal definition of the way communities are used within an ASN. This allows for both automated generation of the definitions, as well as for the automated parsing of it. As you may know, The NLNOG Looking Glass tries to provide information on communities when looking up prefixes. We have used a custom, loosely defined format for that for a long time, and many of you have provided community definitions for their networks. Now, the NLNOG Looking Glass also allows you to host your own draft-ietf-grow-yang-bgp-communities style definitions. We can retrieve this file from a specified location and use it for adding BGP community details to the Looking Glass output. RIPE NCC was the first to provide definitions for their ASNs 25152 and 197000, so if you look up routes originating from those ASNs you will see community descriptions based on this standard. One of these prefixes is 193.0.9.0/24, a stored output with a number of different communities on it can be found here: https://lg.ring.nlnog.net/prefix?saved=KSSIRWOFx3 We hope this encourages you to formalise your BGP communities in a similar manner using this standard. Pull requests on https://github.com/NLNOG/lg.ring.nlnog.net/blob/main/community_urls.yml for new locations of definitions are welcome, and of course new files in the old format are also still appreciated. Martin, thanks for the great work and for the help getting this implemented in the NLNOG Looking Glass! Cheers, Teun PS: sorry if you received this email via more than one mailing list :)

Hallo allemaal, hi everyone, (English text can be found below) Lekker Weer NLNOG 2024 was een groot succes met boeiende praatjes, veel gezelligheid en lekker eten! Mooi Weer NLNOG 2024
by Teun Vink 10 Jun '24

10 Jun '24

Hoi allemaal, hi everyone! (English text can be found below) Nog ruim twee weken en dan is het zover: Mooi Weer NLNOG 2024 zal plaatsvinden in BIT-MeetMe in Ede. We ask you to register for the event at https://pretix.eu/nlnog/lekkerweer2024/ so we know how many people to expect, since space is limited and we want to make sure we have enough food and drinks for everyone. To make it easier to visit the event by public transport we have arranged a bus service from train station Ede/Wageningen to BIT-MeetMe in the afternoon, and in the opposite direction in the evening. If you want to make use of this service, please let us know on the registration form. Dietary requirements can be specified there as well. For this event we’re still looking for several interesting talks to fill the programme. In Memoriam: Erik Bais
by Teun Vink 29 May '24

29 May '24

Beste allemaal, dear all, (English text can be found below) Dinsdagmiddag 28 mei bereikte ons het droevige nieuws dat Erik Bais op veel te jonge leeftijd overleden is. Het bestuur van Stichting NLNOG (English text) Tuesday afternoon, May 28, we received the sad news that Erik Bais passed away at a much too young age. The shock this brought within the Dutch internet community is beyond words. Erik was at the heart of this community, among other things through his roles within the Dutch Cloud Community, the Anti Abuse Network, and the RIPE Address Policy Working Group. He dedicated himself to these organizations selflessly and with great enthusiasm. He had also been active within NLNOG for many years: he was often found on the mailing list and IRC, and Erik was almost always present at the events. Erik loved helping others, and many benefited from the knowledge and experience he generously and regularly shared. This could be in the technical field, but often in very different areas as well. This was especially evident after the presentation Erik gave at NLNOG Day 2019 about working in a toxic work environment. This was an eye-opener for several attendees and gave them the push they needed to start improving their working conditions. He also took the time to talk to people about this and to advise them. The NLNOG board is very grateful to Erik for all the years his companies sponsored our events. The prize of a /24 block of IPv4 addresses that he offered to the winner of the NLNOG Quiz for several years quickly became legendary. The loss of Erik is incredibly great. We wish his family, colleagues, friends, and everyone who cared about him a lot of strength in this difficult time. The NLNOG Board
